Africa’s Solar Gigawatts Are Real. So Are Its 600 Million Without Power.

A new survey ranks Africa's top 10 solar projects, led by Egypt's Benban and Morocco's Noor Ouarzazate. Yet 600 million Africans still lack electricity — and no comparable East African project is yet in the pipeline.

South Africa supplies seven of the remaining eight entries. What We Know / What We Don’t

We know South Africa’s dominance of the list — six of its own projects among the ten — reflects its head start under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, not a one-off. We know roughly 600 million Africans lack electricity access today, a figure consistent across the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and Sustainable Energy for All’s 2026 reporting.

We don’t know: how much of the power these flagship projects generate reaches households and small businesses versus industrial or export offtake — the survey measures installed and operational capacity, not last-mile connection rates. We also don’t yet know whether Benban’s planned 200 MW addition will connect on schedule before September 2026, or whether Sudan and its East African neighbors have any comparable utility-scale solar project far enough along to appear on a similar list within the next two to three years; neither source site reported one this week.
